First Rapid Test for Hepatitis C Available in August

The FDA has approved the first rapid antibody test available in the U.S. for detecting Hepatitis C antibodies in people 15 years and older. The OraQuick HCV Rapid Antibody Test uses oral fluid, fingerstick or venipuncture whole blood, serum or plasma sample collection. Test results are available in 20 minutes, and the portable test has an 18-month shelf life. Users simply collect a sample on a handheld collection strip and insert it into a buffer. Results are read similar to a pregnancy test, with two lines appearing in the test window if the test is reactive. According to manufacturer OraSure Technologies, the OraQuick HCV will be available in August, at which time pricing will be announced.
