Emerging Technologies — Strengthening the Continuum of Care

As technology continues to evolve, digital systems that enable better patient care and more efficient EMS agencies are already in use nationwide. A thoughtful review of today’s technology and analysis of the strategic direction for future technology use in EMS is addressed in a new report, “Emerging Digital Technologies in Emergency Medical Services: Considerations and Strategies to Strengthen the Continuum of Care.”

NHTSA’s Office of EMS will host a webinar —— part of it’s collaborative Federal webinar series, EMS Focus -—— Emerging Technologies — Strengthening the Continuum of Care, which takes a close look at the strategies recommended in this report and discusses a current example of technology use, October 8 at 12 p.m. Eastern.

Industry experts will share insights about the innovative ways that prehospital care can be improved with new technologies, including digital data, medical devices and software applications. The discussion will be moderated by the Office of EMS and include Benjamin Schooley, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Health Information Technology and Research Director at the Health Information Technology Consortium at the University of South Carolina and James P. Marcin, MD, MPH, Professor, Pediatric Critical Care at UC Davis Children’s Hospital.

“The EMS community has a tremendous opportunity to impact prehospital care, system operations and health system costs by implementing innovative and effective technology. Collaboration and data sharing remain critical in further developing and enhancing the EMS continuum of care,” said Drew Dawson, director of the Office of EMS.

Attendees will be encouraged to participate in an open question-and-answer session, with the webinar and Q&A lasting approximately one hour. Every other month, the EMS Focus webinar series provides a venue to discuss critical initiatives, issues, and challenges for EMS stakeholders nationwide.
