FREDERICK, Md. – Authorities in Frederick say 42 children and six adults escaped injury when the bus carrying them to a Pennsylvania ski resort caught fire on Interstate 270.
Maryland State Police Cpl. Josh Kerns said Thursday the group was bound for the Liberty Mountain Resort in Carroll Valley, Pa. He said he didn’t know where they were from.
Police say the children were 8 to 15 years old.
Troopers were dispatched at 9:14 a.m. and found the rear of the bus engulfed in flames on the shoulder of northbound I-270 just south of Route 85.
Frederick County Emergency Services spokesman Michael Dmuchowski (dee-moo-CHOW’-ski) says a public transit bus was sent to get the travelers off the highway until other travel arrangements could be made.
