Charlotte (NC) New Year’s Day Bus Crash Kills One, Injures Four

Ames Alexander – The Charlotte Observer

One person was killed and four others were injured in what MEDIC called a “very serious” east Charlotte crash involving a CATS bus New Year’s morning.

The victim, whose name has not yet been released, was killed after a bus and a passenger vehicle collided, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.

MEDIC said it transported two patients with life-threatening injuries to Novant Presbyterian Medical Center, and two others with minor injuries to Atrium Health-Mercy.

The ambulance service responded to the crash near Central Avenue and Reddman Road — near the site of the old Eastland Mall — just before 8:30 am.

Over police radio, an officer described “heavy, heavy” damage and said a driver appeared to be breathing but was bleeding badly.

“One subject went through the windshield partially,” the officer said.

It’s unclear from the radio traffic who went through the windshield or which driver was badly hurt.

CMPD said its Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the collision.

No further information was immediately available.
