Car Crashes Into Washington, D.C. Restaurant

WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) — Two women pedestrians were badly injured Wednesday evening when a car jumped the curb of the median at 18th Street and Florida Avenue, NW, struck them, and the crashed into a nearby restaurant.

The accident happened at about 8:45 when the car appeared to swerve to avoid an oncoming vehicle. Witnesses say that is when the driver lost control and hit the women.

Pete Piringer, spokesperson for DC Fire and EMS, says both women were transported to a nearby hospital with traumatic injuries. However, one of the victim’s injuries are considered life-threatening.

The driver refused medical care at the scene and was being interviewed by police to determine what, if any, charges will be brought against her.

The restaurant, Keren, has been run by the same family for 26 years. It serves African food, doing a busy lunch business, but had closed for the day about 45 minutes before the accident.

None of the staff members who remained in the restaurant was injured. A structural engineer was inspecting the scene Wednesday evening to determine if it safe to enter the building.
