NEW YORK – Relatives say a baby who suffered a fractured skull in a dramatic escape from a deadly Brooklyn fire last month is out of danger after a series of surgeries
Five people died on Jan. 30 when fire ripped through an apartment building overcrowded with Guatemalan immigrants in the borough’s Bensonhurst section.
Three-month-old Maria Maura Chan survived only because her mother dropped her and her 2-year-old brother out a second floor window as the flames closed in.
Their father, Miguel Chan, told reporters at a memorial service Friday that Maria is still hospitalized, but doing better and undergoing therapy for her sight and hearing.
The baby’s mother didn’t make it. Firefighters found her body in the rubble.
