After Two Memphis (TN) Fire Medics Are Hit, Chief Wants Stricter Penalties for Drivers

The Memphis Fire Department wants a policy change after an alleged drunk driving crash injured two firefighter-medics.

One of the medics suffered a broken leg, the Memphis Firefighters Association said.

Police say Reginald McKenzie, 49, was driving in an emergency lane Sunday when his car plowed into the medics and their ambulance. McKenzie admitted to consuming several drinks before the crash, according to WREG. McKenzie, according to the report, has been charged with at least three DUIs since 2005.

Fire Chief Gina Sweat wrote on Facebook: “Seriously Memphis drivers, it is ridiculous that you continue to crash into our Fire & EMS apparatus but when you seriously injure our 1st responders it is unforgivable. Slow down and move over so we can do our jobs without fear of being assaulted by your vehicles.”
