In Honor of Black History Month, say hello to Retired Lt. Butler Grant! He was the first Black paramedic with Warrenton Volunteer Fire Company (Formerly Warrenton Volunteer Rescue Squad) and also the first Black law enforcement officer at Warrenton Police Department and one of the first black deputies at Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office.

He was many first at the Sheriff’s office. In addition to his prior honorable military and law enforcement service, Butler Lewis Alfonso Grant was a devoted and well-respected deputy sheriff for Fauquier County for 24 years.

More African American/Black History Month: Lt. Mark Myers

Lt. Grant began his service on July 1, 1984, making history as Fauquier’s first Black deputy. His steady rise through the ranks included corporal and D.A.R.E. instructor, sergeant and patrol shift supervisor, detective and lieutenant.

Lt. Grant is credited with implementing the Property and Evidence Division and for being the first Black officer on the command staff. He retired in June 2008 at age 70. 

He is remembered by many for his strong sense of community service and compassion for those in need. Lt. Grant’s service remains a model for the modern law enforcement officer. Happy Black History Month!
