UT Proposal Would End Surprise Ambulance Billing

Utah lawmakers are considering a bill that would prohibit balance billing for ground ambulance services, following the lead of at least 18 other states.

If passed, the bill could provide financial relief for patients like Michael and Robyne Gallagher, a Utah couple surprised by a $2,900 bill for an ambulance ride their infant son needed, Fox 13 reports.

Critics such as Laura Lisk, of Wendover Ambulance, tell the station the measure may force private providers out of business.

The proposed legislation would also slightly increase the base rate for ambulance providers, but it does not affect mileage rates, which currently stand at $42.24 per loaded mile.
