Firefighters and Firefighter/Paramedics respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, working with their assigned station crew to provide basic or advanced life support care to patients, and performing fire prevention, fire suppression, and emergency rescue operations. The Grand Junction Fire Department has a 48/96 work schedule.

Requirements

Respond to fire and emergency alarms; perform all phases of fire suppression work including ventilation, overhaul, salvage and clean-up activities at fire scene; place fire hoses; set ladders; operate fire streams, ventilate and enter burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims; operate pneumatic and auxiliary equipment such as generators or pumps; operate rope systems, technical rescue and hazmat equipment.

Provide emergency medical care and advanced life support at emergency and accident scenes which may include defibrillation, clearing airways, pulmonary ventilation, intubations, inserting IVs, splinting fractures, treating burns, emergency surgical procedures, performing CPR and administering medication; inform physicians of patient conditions.

Assume responsibility for EMS scene in the absence of higher level staff; provide direction and supervision to other employees at an emergency medical scene; direct patient care and transport; obtain medical data including patient identification, medical history, type of accident or nature of illness, rescue measures preceding emergency care, care given at the scene and during transport and changes in diagnostic signs.

Monitor and maintain necessary medical and station supplies; reorder supplies as needed.

Participate in drills, training exercises classes and activities including but not limited to those related to fire fighting, emergency medical service, technical rescue, extrication, physical fitness and other related areas.

Perform fire station and equipment maintenance and cleaning activities; maintain station living quarters in a clean and orderly condition through routine clean-up procedures; identify deficiencies in equipment and quarters; perform minor repairs on equipment and vehicles or report deficiencies to proper staff for other disposition.

Conduct and participate in drills and training exercises; develop skills in fire suppression, medical aid, apparatus operation and other related areas; conduct emergency medical technician classes and evaluate and re-certify participants.

Participate in public relations, fire/safety education activities, and fire prevention activities including station tours, fire safety/fire suppression education away from the station, school education programs, group activities, fire drills, courtesy walk through visits, and phone inquiries.

Perform fire prevention inspections of commercial occupancies through departmental inspection program; identify fire and life safety hazards; provide suggestions for correction; schedule re-inspections for verification of correction; submit reports as needed.

Prepare and maintain a variety of records and logs; prepare a variety of reports.

DESCRIPTION

Description of Position

Reporting to the EMS Program Director, the incumbent will teach discipline specific courses as needed using a variety of methodologies. The successful candidate may teach American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS courses. Initial and refresher EMT and Paramedic courses, as well as Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support courses in a lecture and lab setting. EMT and Paramedic courses utilize the NHTSA National Standard curriculum and the National Registry of EMT skills evaluations.

Responsibilities will include course preparation and instruction; curriculum development; participation in the college community and continued professional growth activities; and creative program building based on needs assessment and in collaboration with other faculty. May be asked to teach other courses in disciplines in which she/he is able to be credentialed.

Besides traditional class structuring, the College is also attempting to meet the varying needs of our students by offering weekend, year-round, and compressed courses of instruction and services. Since service to our students is our highest priority, instructors can expect to participate in innovative methods and assignments may be multi-campus with the possibility of interactive, online, day, evening and/or weekend classes.

The general expectation is that full-time faculty serve as provisional faculty for a period of three years prior to being reviewed for continuing status. The determination of faculty status is, however, ultimately at the discretion of the Yavapai College District Governing Board and the College President, as the Board’s designee.

Minimum Expectations & Requirements

Credentialing Requirements for Faculty Teaching Coursework in Emergency Medical Services:

• Bachelor’s degree in the discipline to be taught; OR the ability to obtain a Bachelor’s degree within 18 months;

• Five (5) years recent work experience in the field to be taught AND

•Specialized certificates as noted below MUST be attached to application

Requirements for EMS instructor:

• Current NREMT certification, at either EMT or Paramedic level.

• Current AZ EMCT certification

•Current AHA provider certifications

•Current ITLS or PHTLS instructor certifications.”

– Knowledgeable in current composition theory and practice

– Experience with instruction for different populations (developmental, multicultural, applied learning)

– Experience with Student Learning Outcomes Assessment

Preferred Skills & Abilities

– Current American Heart Assn. BLS Instructor, ACLS Instructor and PALS Instructor Certifications

– NIMS 1

– NAMSE 1 or 24 hours of adult learning modalities

– Community college teaching experience

– Experience with multi-media technology to enhance student learning

Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates must be able to: drive an emergency vehicle; have excellent communications skills (in person, over the radio/telephone, and written); work varying shift schedules including day shift, night shift, hybrid shifts including weekends and holidays; perform a wide variety of duties with accuracy and speed under pressure; provide patient care to the respective certification level; follow safety protocols and perform in a safe manner; able to understand navigation equipment and tools, including maps, and be able find locations within our response area; perform calmly in emergency situations; and other related duties as assigned.

BLS (AHA or ASHI)

ICS course certifications 100, 200, 700 and 800 (Required within 3 months of hire)

Paramedic candidates also need:

ITLS or PHTLS or TECC (preferred)

PEPP or PALS or EPC (preferred)

Candidates must also provide the following:

Copy of a High School Diploma or GED (College Degree or Transcript may be used)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge must include but is not limited to:  laws and regulations of US DOT, FCC, DEA and SCDHEC in regard to the practice of emergency medical services, vehicle extrication and rescue principles, patient stabilization, medical terminology, and defensive driving techniques.  EMT’s are responsible for providing patient care to the level of their certification. All employees are responsible for communicating appropriately, ensuring the readiness of vehicles and equipment, maintaining uniforms and stations, attending training, and following safety and medical guidelines.
