Community Paramedic

This is responsible paramedic work within the Madison Fire Department’s Community Paramedicine Program, which may include work as part of the Community Alternative Response Emergency Services (CARES) Teaminitiative, and in conjunction with the Madison Police Department and Dane County Health and Human Services, to address mental health crisis calls for service.  Paramedics in this classification provide proactive care for at-risk individuals in the community. Employees promote and maintain the health of at-risk individuals through appropriate physical assessment and interventions, counseling, advocacy, referral and education. Work is performed independently within established standards and in collaboration with medical providers and other resource providers to assure coordination of care is provided. Employees are expected to exercise considerable judgment and initiative. The work is performed under the medical leadership of the Madison Fire Department (MFD) Medical Director, with a direct reporting relationship to the Division Chief of Medical Affairs.

Requirements

Two (2) years of experience as a Paramedic at a recognized EMS system.

Possession of a current driver’s license at the time of hire.

Possession of current CPR and ACLS cards at the time of application.

Must have and maintain State certification at the level of EMT-P or be nationally registered as an EMT-P at the time of application.

The Emergency Medical Tech – Basic administers efficient, rapid, quality care and transport to critically ill or injured patients in a dynamic and demanding environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

Provides critical care interventions and patient transport, in an independent capacity, to provide quality care to a varied patient population. Operates ambulance in a safe and appropriate manner at all times.

Performs patient assessments and evaluations effectively and promptly and institutes treatment plans that are prioritized appropriately and are within the scope of care guidelines as set forth by the Texas Department of Health Services (TDHS).

Evaluates the status of patients to monitor the effectiveness of interventions, and revises treatment plans promptly and effectively as necessary according to the changing needs of patients.

Responds quickly to patients’ request for assistance with personal hygiene needs.

Documents and organizes patient care information accurately and thoroughly, with no more than 5% of service reports returned for completion.

Completes daily check list for assigned ambulances to ensure that the ambulance is maintained in a constant state of readiness to respond quickly to any emergency call.

Changes cot linen and removes soiled items, dirt and trash at the completion of each run. Notifies the appropriate personnel immediately when required supplies and equipment are not available for stocking the unit.

Maintains the cleanliness and functionality of the cleaning, sleeping and crew quarter areas on a regular basis. Performs daily tasks necessary to keep the ambulance bay clean and safe from hazards.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

Earned Instructor status preferred.

Current Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), PALS, and instructor certifications preferred.

Understands and completes professional and technical requirements and provides necessary documentation on such requirements.

Requirements

This is not an entry-level position. Below are the minimum education/experience requirements and preferred experience requirements that we are looking for in applicants.

– Requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent.

– Must be at least 18 years of age.

– Must have eight (8) months of experience as a Public Safety Telecommunicator working in a Public Safety Answering Point.

– Preferred no less than forty-five (45) hours of public safety communications coursework that meet the minimum course of study requirements as set forth by the Tennessee Rules of Department of Commerce and Insurance Emergency Communications Board, Chapter 0780-6-2, Dispatcher Training Regulations.

– Preferred N.C.I.C. (National Crime Information Center) or T.I.E.S. (Tennessee Information Enforcement System) valid certification.

– Preferred Emergency Medical Dispatch and CPR valid certifications.

– Preferred to have been employed as a Public Safety Telecommunicator within the last year.
