Firefighter Paramedic

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position.  The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

Responds to emergency calls for medical assistance, fire suppression, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, explosions, bomb threats, downed power lines, and other emergency situations; responds to instructions from dispatcher.

Assists in providing basic, intermediate, and advanced life support treatment to patients as well as transportation to appropriate medical facilities; assesses the condition of patients and makes decisions regarding proper courses of action; administers initial treatment at emergency scene, such as CPR, cardiac monitoring, medication calculation and administration, immobilization of body, wound treatment, control of bleeding, monitoring and relaying of vital signs, oxygen and IV therapy administration, sterile suctioning, intubation, defibrillation, ECG monitoring and the management of cardiac arrest and severe trauma patients; performs extrication of victims from wreckage, as necessary; maintains radio communications with dispatch center, hospital personnel, and other public safety agencies to receive and to transmit instructions involving patient care; maintains all treatment-related documentation.

Assists in providing protection of life and property; suppresses, controls and extinguishes fires; performs search, rescue, extrication of victims, and forcible entries; assists individuals from burning structures; establishes openings in buildings for entrance, ventilation, or salvage; ventilates smoke and gas from buildings; positions/climbs ladders of various heights to access upper levels of buildings and perform rescue operations; performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris; assists with cleanup activities.

Assists in locating water supplies to fight fires; lays out and maneuvers fire hoses; operates pumps and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire; determines appropriate quantity of water to supply and level of water pressure to use on lines; disconnects and rolls used hoses.

Maintains a state of readiness/preparation for emergency response; checks/maintains stock of equipment and supplies on fire vehicles and in fire station; re-loads equipment and apparatus following response to emergency calls; assists in preparing apparatus for subsequent emergencies and in testing hoses/pumps on apparatus.

Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, buildings, quarters, apparatus, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting/testing equipment, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning quarters, or grounds maintenance; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment for necessary maintenance work.

Provides response, assistance, or follow-up for non-emergency situations, such as investigating 911 hang-up calls, investigating odors, or checking well-being of elderly residents.

Assists with determining cause of fires; investigates and gathers information from scene; prepares and forwards findings.

Assists with providing the public with information regarding fire safety issues; participates in fire prevention, pre-fire planning and other fire education activities for other government agencies and the public; schedules and conducts fire safety programs; conducts tours of fire station and fire trucks.

Prepares various records and reports such as incident reports, station log books, bag sheet ledgers, operator’s report, leave requests, fire inspection reports, etc.

Communicates with supervisors, employees, volunteers, dispatchers, other departments, fire officials, law enforcement officials, medical personnel, property owners/occupants, victims, utility companies, civic organizations, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures; maintains an awareness of new equipment, procedures, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; participates in physical fitness training and fire drills; attends regular continuing education classes in fire-fighting, rescue, first aid, fire prevention, equipment maintenance and related subjects to remain knowledgeable and develop skills in fire-fighting methods.

Operates, utilizes and maintains various firefighting and medical equipment and tools, such as a fire truck, generators, air compressor, vehicles, shovels, axes, chain saws, self contained breathing apparatus, special protective clothing, fire extinguishers, certain chemicals used in fighting fires, bars, hooks, aerial ladder truck, fire pumper truck, portable generators, gas saws; operates a personal computer or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

Operates a personal computer, telephone, or other office equipment as necessary to complete administrative functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs general housekeeping, laundry, cooking, and maintenance work associated with maintaining fire station; operates related equipment.

Provides general public service functions, such as providing standby assistance for fireworks displays or helicopter landings, escorting parades/funerals, or providing general directions.

Performs other related duties as required.

Wage Range: $22.00 to $35.49 hourly

General Description:

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit operates three Bell 407 helicopters. On most missions, the Flight

Paramedic/TFO sits beside the pilot operating the police radios and camera systems. On medical missions the

medic will move into the rear of the cabin to provide care to patients while in flight to the closest trauma center.

In a typical year, our Air One Crews will provide live saving care to over 100 patients on medevac missions. In

addition to general law enforcement duties and medevac duties, Air One crews perform various search and

rescue missions for the US Coast Guard, as well as provide support in fighting wildfires.

Requirements

Minimal Qualifications:

• State of Florida driver’s license.

• State of Florida Paramedic Certification or National Registry Paramedic Certification (LP/EMTP/NREMT-P).

• Basic Life Support Certification.

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification

• Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support

• Air Medical Crew Core Curriculum (Preferred but required after hired).

Essential Functions:

• Responds to emergency calls that require air transport (e.g., in remote locations or from hospitals that

are far apart)

• Assesses a patient’s condition at the scene and determining a course of treatment (e.g., administering

medication, injections, advanced airway managements, and IVs)

• Gets the patient safely in the helicopter and transporting them safely to a hospital.

• Reports what treatment the patient has already received to emergency physicians, nurses, or other

healthcare facility staff.

• Documents medical care given to patients.

• Tracks stock and replaces and cleans supplies and equipment after use.

• Operates the tactical police radios, cameras systems (FLIR), as well as recording and navigation

equipment.

• Setting up perimeters for tactical aerial surveillance on law enforcement missions

• Writes police reports and submits evidence collected on law enforcement missions.

• Conducts public outreach with other departments.

• Give passenger briefings and assist in the loading and unloading of passengers.

• Assists with safety and security in and around the aircraft while on the ground.

• Refueling of the aircraft upon return to Aviation and “Hot Refueling” as missions dictate.

• Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the Aircraft and Hangar.

• Assists the Pilot as needed or requested.

• Provides medical assistance on specialty vehicles during certain events to include but not limited to

High Water Vehicle’s and SWAT Bearcat as needed.

• Additional duties as assigned by management to meet the needs of the Agency.

Environmental Conditions:

• Most tasks are performed in flight where proper provisions are in place in terms of employee security

and protection. Due to the nature of aerial operations, tasks include potential for intermittent

exposure to disagreeable elements consistent with inclement weather, high wind speeds, and

equipment stress.

• Must be able to work a 12-hour shift on a 2-3-3 rotation (0530-1730), off every other weekend FridaySunday.

• Must be able to rotate between dayshift and nightshift every 4 months.

• Must be able to work under stressful conditions.

• Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

Required Skills and Knowledge

Knowledge of:

• Methods and techniques for providing onsite emergency medical services.

• VSO General Orders, procedures, and safety

policies.

• Federal, State, County, and local laws and

ordinances.

Ability to:

medical personnel, victims, and family.

Physical Requirements:

• Manual dexterity.

Tactical Paramedic

Salary: $26.00 (Hourly Wage)

This position performs emergency medical treatment to team members injured or ill persons while engaged in a tactical operation, providing the best possible treatment until the transfer to emergency medical services system. Must be capable of

reacting with speed and composure under high stress conditions and must exercise initiative and independent judgment in determining proper actions to take. Position requires patient care in a training or high-risk environment and operates within the guidelines provided by the Pinellas County Emergency Medical Services Director.

Position is on an as-needed basis, includes mandatory quarterly and annual training assignments, and requires members to be available for on-call rotations including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Members in this position must reside in the following counties: Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, or Manatee.

The applicant must have a valid State of Florida Paramedic Certification and be a Pinellas County Certified Paramedic.

High school graduation or equivalent diploma from an institution accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Dept. Of Education or licensed as a degree granting institution by the commission for Independent Education

Current Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification

Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association or equivalent

Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course certification

Current Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC) certification

Current Advanced Practice Paramedic (APP) certification, or attained within one (1) year

Completion of an approved forty (4) hour Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC)/Tactical Emergency Medical Service (TEMS) course, or within two years of employment

Must maintain appropriate, unrestricted credentials according to the licensure, certification, and registration requirements of the jurisdiction

Requires that the member be at least 21 years of age

Must be able to meet all legal requirements of Florida State Statute 790.06, License to Carry Concealed Weapon or Firearm within six (6) months of employment

Member will be required to carry an agency issued handgun while on duty

Must be able to meet all legal requirements of Florida State Statute 790.25(a) within one year of employment

Completed an approved 80 hour Basic SWAT School, within one year of employment

Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license
