PA Hospital Closure Pushes EMS Burden on Neighboring Hospital

Sharon Regional Medical Center, a facility now operating on emergency room diversion status and with limited staffing, is facing potential closure on January 6.

A notice posted on the hospital doors states that the facility is closed, following months of uncertainty. Its parent company, Steward Health Care, filed for bankruptcy, WKBN reports. While an agreement in principle has been announced with Tenet Health Partners to keep the Sharon facility open, a finalized deal remains elusive.

Dr. Valeri Roth, Chief of Surgery at Sharon Regional, expressed hope that the closure would last no more than two days. “The longer this goes on, the harder it will be to come back,” Roth told WKBN.

In the meantime, patients requiring emergency care are being redirected to UPMC Horizon in Farrell. Douglas Dick, Chief of Superior Ambulance, confirmed that while Sharon’s emergency department closure has led to longer wait times at UPMC, EMS services have not yet been significantly impacted. However, he warned that could change depending on call volume and patient severity.
