CARMEL, Ind. — The Carmel Fire Department and the Indiana Donor Network hope a new partnership will mean an increase in the number of people who can donate tissue after they die.
Organs, including human, tissue, cannot be donated from people who die outside of a hospital in the state, WISH-TV reports.
Hospitals are the only institutions required by law to make a tissue donor referral. That means if a person dies at a nursing home, while on hospice or a home, a referral cannot be made.
One tissue donor can help up to 75 people.
The Indiana Donor Network is working with other departments on similar partnerships.
