No New Charges Filed Against Former Dallas (TX) Firefighter-Paramedic Who Kicked Mentally Ill Man

Police have cleared a former Dallas (TX) Fire-Rescue firefighter-paramedic of any wrongdoing in connection to an incident where a mentally ill man was kicked in the head, according to a report.

The Dallas Observer reports the family of Kyle Vess hoped the public integrity investigation would bring new charges against Brad Cox, a trained mixed-martial artist.

The August 2019 incident was captured on camera where crews were responding to a call about a grass fire. Vess was found lying near a patch of burned grass.

Cox approached the scene and began stomping on the grass. Vess later stood up and took a swing at Cox and threw a piece of PVC pipe at him. Vess then fell to the ground and Cox began repeatedly kicking him.

Last week, a judge dismissed the family’s civil suit brought against the city. The family’s attorney argued the city was at least partly responsible for Vess’ injuries because it didn’t provide city employees with de-escalation and use-of-force training.

The attorney also argued the city was responsible because Cox should have been fired for previous misconduct.

Cox’s license was originally suspended, but it was later returned to him.
