EMS leaders convened in “Chocolatetown USA”–also known as the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania–on Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, for the Page, Wolfberg and Wirth (PWW) Media XI Leadership Conference at the Hershey Lodge.
The Executive Institute (XI) is a one-day interactive workshop with sessions tailored for EMS industry executives, chiefs, top-level managers, owners and leaders interested in high-level views and discussions about reimbursement, compliance, privacy, leadership and human resource management.
Well-known industry leader, Mike Taigman, kicked off the morning with an eye-opening keynote. Taigman offered attendees strategies for cultivating a workplace that’s nurturing and leads to long-term happiness. PWW founding partner, Steve Wirth, highlighted several “crazy cases” in EMS in the EMS Law Track. Wirth spoke about seven EMS cases and provided critical EMS takeaways and lessons from each of them. Cases included a pregnancy discrimination case, a snooping case, and a sexual discrimination case.
Christie Mellott, of Counsel with PWW, educated attendees about the importance of dealing with gender issues in today’s environment.
Chris Kelly, PWW’s newest attorney, was featured in this year’s “Integrated Compliance” sessions, where EMS leaders learned how intertwined call intake is with the overall revenue cycle, and how proactively reaching out to facilities can substantially improve compliance and the bottom line.
PWW partner Ryan Stark held an open forum in the “One Quick Question,” session, where attendees asked the HIPAA guru about some of the most pressing privacy and security issues they’ve been puzzling with.
Amanda Stark, PWW’s master of all things compliance, explained why it’s so important to have clear and concise policies so that staff members interpret them the way they’re intended. Stark provided an insider’s perspective as a former compliance officer and gave attendees great strategies in drafting policies.
PWW founding partner Doug Wolfberg closed the Leadership track by sharing six important leadership lessons from the 1960s. From Martin Luther King to the Beatles, Doug enlightened attendees about what EMS leaders can learn from pivotal moments during that significant decade.
The day concluded with the National EMS Liability Review, hosted by Doug Wolfberg and Steve Wirth. Wolfberg and Wirth highlighted the top legal issues facing EMS leaders today, including identifying business costs, heeding the #MeToo movement, and managing risks to patient data. Leaders got an inside look into the critical issues that will shape the way EMS leaders manage in 2018 and beyond.
XI was followed by two days of the abc360 Conference, where the PWW attorneys and consultants focused on revenue cycle management, compliance, privacy and practical skills for billers.
