AMR and Rural/Metro Merge

Rural/Metro Corp., which provides fire and ambulance service in East Tennessee, has entered into a merger agreement with American Medical Response (AMR), a subsidiary of Envision Healthcare, a Colorado-based company providing medical transportation and other services across the country.

The merger agreement includes all of Rural/Metro’s emergency medical services, fire services and other business operations. In East Tennessee, Rural/Metro is headquartered in Knox County and its 800 employees provide fire and ambulance services in Knox County and ambulance service in Blount, Loudon, McMinn, Polk and Franklin counties, according to the company website.

For now, nothing will change, Tom Milton, Rural/Metro community relations director, said Thursday.

“The two companies will have to go through a regulatory review process, so for the next 90 days we will continue to operate just as we have,” he said.

After that, the companies will look to see how operations might be integrated, Milton said.

“Our hope is to see that this company, with a strong national presence like AMR, can partner with Rural/Metro to offer services that they do well and that Rural/Metro offers but they don’t,” he said.

For example, AMR does not have a fire division, Milton said.

Headquartered in Scotts- dale, Ariz., Rural/Metro has 7,500 employees and operates in 21 states. Envision Healthcare, which has several subsidiaries including AMR, has 35,000 employees.

AMR provides and manages community-based medical transportation services including emergency and nonemergency service, managed transportation, fixed-wing air ambulance service and disaster response.

The combined companies will be able to share technologies and access patient data and generally provide new and enhanced services beyond traditional medical transportation.
