Meet: Melissa Saavedra Castrejon

Title/Length of Service: I have been at Wake County (NC) EMS since May 2022, initially as an EMT and after the internal paramedic program, now as a paramedic.

Heritage: My family is originally from Mexico.

What are some of your biggest obstacles, as a Hispanic female working in EMS? Some of my biggest obstacles in this field is breaking stereotypes. Especially as a Hispanic female, we don’t get proper representation and biases can affect how we are treated in the field.

Who inspires you? Women and Hispanics in healthcare inspire me. Seeing them succeed always encouraged me to believe I could too!

Why should we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? Celebrating Hispanic heritage month is very important. It is a time for us to share the different parts of our culture and help bring us together.
