This might not be the first time Fire Department New York EMS Lt. Farooq Muhammad has released an EMS rap video, but “Blue Star” is the first one to includes firefighters.
“Before it was just strictly about how EMS goes on calls. I thought it would be great to show how we interact on calls,” says Muhammad, who was promoted to supervisor on Feb. 14. He said his decision to include, EMTs, paramedics and firefighters stemmed from the fact that this is the 10th anniversary of 9/11, which affected both fire and EMS. “I think it’s an important year for the Fire Department of New York. This commemorates that.”
Muhammad released his video during an awards ceremony for the department’s annual clinical competition. During the day-long competition, the best BLS and best ALS teams from each burough competes to be No. 1 — and to win a brand-new ambulance.
FDNY EMS Chief Abdo Nahmod says Muhammad’s video fits the department’s EMS Week 2011 Theme, “Changing the Future One Call at a Time” because that is a theme they share with their fire bretheren. “He’s been fantastic putting together these videos,” Nahmod says.
“They like this one the best so far,” says Muhammad This year’s video, “Blue Star” took more time, work, equipment and people than the last two years’, he said, estimating he spent 70 hours alone on the project.
