New York City is holding off sending layoff notices to 22 thousand municipal employees — including 400 FDNY emergency medical workers — in hopes of receiving a $5 billion loan from the state.

Monday was supposed to be the day that layoff notices were sent out. Mayor Bill de Blasio said the move will be on a day-to-day basis, according to the New York Post.

“Now our municipal labor unions have come to me in the last few days and asked for more time to see if they can resolve this issue,” de Blasio said. “They’ve asked for an opportunity to convince the state legislature to reconvene immediately to address long-term borrowing.”

De Blasio previously said the cuts were necessary to create $1 billion in savings needed to balance the budget.

Union leaders tell the Post de Blasio should not threaten layoffs. “Don’t gouge our eyes out while we’re trying to help you get financing,” the union official said.
