On Thursday, May 27, FDNY members, family and friends attended a park re-naming ceremony in the Bronx in honor of FDNY EMT Yadira Arroyo.

Arroyo was assigned to Station 26 in the Bronx and bravely served the Department for 14 years. On March 16, 2017, Arroyo was critically injured while responding to a medical call in the Bronx when an individual seized control of her ambulance and struck her.

She was transported to Jacobi Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries.

“Four years ago, Yadi’s life was taken just blocks from here,” FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said. “She was murdered as she bravely tried to do her job and respond to a call for help from a pregnant woman having a medical emergency. She was a true hero, not because she was cruelly taken from us all far too early, she was a hero because every day she came to work and went out into this community answering calls for help.”

The suspect, Jose Gonzalez, was charged with murder and awaits trial.
