DALLAS COUNTY, Iowa — Dallas County struggles to retain paramedics who often view their positions as a steppingstone to more lucrative jobs in nearby suburbs. Other smaller emergency medical services departments have similar problems as suburban growth increases the demand for full-time paramedics in central Iowa. But Dallas County’s situation is unique because of a 10-year contract it has with West Des Moines. The departments share a director and administrative personnel.
