JEMS Editorial Board member, Corey Slovis, MD, was recently honored by the American Association of Emergency Medicine as the recipient of the association’s 2016 Peter Rosen award given annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to AAEM in the area of academic leadership. Slovis is a professor and chair of emergency medicine at Vanderbilt and serves as the medical director for Nashville Fire Department, the NFD Paramedic/EMS Bureau and the Nashville International Airport.
The prestigious award is named after Emergency Medicine’s famous founding father, Peter Rosen, MD, FACEP, a surgeon who developed Denver’s Emergency Medicine Program and a mentor to Denver EMS Medical Director Chris Colwell and thousands of other physicians, students, nurses and EMS providers. Dr Rosen’s book, Rosen’s Emergency Medicine Concepts and Clinical Practices is now in its 8th edition and serves as the authoritative textbook for emergency physicians.
Dr. Rosen has also co-edited many other textbooks, including, The Five Minute Emergency Medicine Consult; Protocols for Prehospital Emergency Care; An Atlas of Emergency Medicine Procedures; Emergency Pediatrics; Essentials of Emergency Medicine; Diagnostic Radiology in Emergency Medicine, and he’s been the director of the emergency medicine residencies at Denver General Hospital/St. Anthony Hospital Systems and the University of Chicago.
When Rosen came to Grady Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Medicine program in Atlanta in the late 70s, Slovis–who spent a total of 15 years at Grady–says he was in complete awe of him, and still is. “He was everyone’s role model, an unobtainable ideal. I never thought I would be writing a chapter in his textbook (electrolyte emergencies) and was shocked, but proud, to win the Rosen award.”
