The Indiana Attorney General is taking legal action against the Dillsboro Volunteer Emergency Medical Services (EMS), seeking to strip the organization of its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in response to concerns about its emergency response shortfalls.
The volunteer ambulance service, which covers Dillsboro, has suffered from insufficient volunteers, leaving neighboring communities to pick up slack, WCPO reports.
The attorney general’s office filed a motion on Friday seeking to revoke the nonprofit status of the Dillsboro Volunteer EMS and freeze its assets, effectively dismantling the organization.
The state alleges that in 2021, the volunteer company responded to 31 percent of calls; that dropped to 21 percent in 2022 and 12 percent in 2023.
County Commissioner James Thatcher told WCPO he hopes the EMS agency’s assets can be turned over to another agency that can restore EMS service to Dillsboro.
