Carol Cunningham, state medical director for the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS and an emergency physician at Akron General Medical Center, is the 2012 recipient of the James Keaney Leadership Award, presented by the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM). Named after the founder of AAEM, the award recognizes an individual member for outstanding contributions to the organization. “I’m not afraid to challenge things,” Cunningham says.
A longtime EMS advocate, she serves as the current chairperson of the National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO) Medical Directors Council. Recently, she was appointed to the EMS Examination Task Force by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, to be an item writer for the EMS subspecialty examination, an opportunity, she says, to be part of history in the making.
“It’s like having a ticket to Woodstock instead of owning the CD,” she says.
