Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Nomination Period Opens

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) announced the opening of the 2010—2011 Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor nomination period. The medal is awarded annually by the president or vice president of the U.S. to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life.

Nominations will be accepted until July 31. Applications are limited to acts of valor that occurred between June 1, 2010, and May 31, 2011.

To receive the Medal of Valor, public safety officers must be nominated by the chief executive officer of their employing agencies; recommended by the bipartisan Medal of Valor Review Board; and cited by the Attorney General.
