Obama Names CMS Administrator

For the first time since October 2006, the position of administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is filled with a permanent employee. On July 7, President Barack Obama used a controversial “recess appointment” to name Donald Berwick, MD, the new administrator. Berwick was previously the president and chief executive officer of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (www.IHI.org), clinical professor of pediatrics and health-care policy at Harvard Medical School and professor of health policy and management at the Harvard School of Public Health.
