FEMA Public Alerting System Progresses

FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), the nation’s next-generation infrastructure of emergency alert and warning networks, progressed in October when the Organization for the Advancement of Structural Information Standards (OASIS) approved the OASIS Common Alerting Protocol v.1.2 USA IPAWS Profile as a technical specification for public alerting systems.

The protocol will allow emergency managers throughout the nation to use a common format for creating emergency alerts that can travel across multiple alerting systems, improving interoperability between federal, state and local alerting systems.
