Patient Care

As you get caught up in emergency medicine, it s easy to forget that the people you care for and transport are human beings. We begin to think of them as cases or runs or some similar term. But they re mothers, fathers, parents, children, grandparents and more. One of the greatest things about EMS is the diversity of humanity we encounter. The best and most professional EMTs I ve met do the job because they love people. But once you lose track of this concept, the whole practice of EMS becomes mundane.

Administration and Leadership

The question of when it's medically and legally safe to leave a patient at a scene after EMS assessment is a thought-provoking one. According to the 2005 JEMS 200-City Survey (February 2006 JEMS), 71.3% of U.S. EMS systems allow providers to treat patients without transporting them, and 35.7% have a policy that allows EMS to refuse transport. When can we evaluate a patient but not transport them? When is patient refusal not a refusal at all? Is it ever appropriate to encourage a patient to go to the ED by private vehicle?

The older I get, the faster life seems to go by. Before I know it, almost another year is over. To top it off, I got an application for AARP this week-just two weeks after I reached "the halfway point in my life," which is how I referred to my last birthday to friends who insisted on reminding me of the milestone. For clarification, my halfway mark isn't 30 or 40; it's the big 5-0. I have the goal to live until I'm at least 100 years old. As jam-packed as life can be, I know I need at least another 50 years to accomplish all the things I have in mind.
