BROWARD COUNTY, Fla Miramar is receiving state money to continue its Community Emergency Response Team.Grants, financed through the Department of Homeland Security, were awarded to four cities in Broward County to help train volunteers for CERT programs. They learn techniques including treatment of broken bones and search-and-rescue skills so they can assist themselves and others after an emergency situation such as a hurricane, tornado or flood.
DANVILLE, Ky. A 69-year-old mother who loved to smile and couldn't get enough of Sam's Club pressed her Phillips Lifeline medical alert button for help -- she was having a heart attack.Lifeline associates responded over a speaker, but Christine Talley of Danville couldn't answer. The medical alert service tried to contact relatives and left phone messages. But if relatives aren't contacted, Lifeline representatives are supposed to contact emergency help immediately. That didn't happen, said Jim Talley, 41, of Danville.

KENNEWICK, Wash. Roger Wright credits Northwest MedStar for saving his life. About two years ago, a MedStar aircraft flew him to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center after doctors at Richland's Kadlec Medical Center referred him there. A cyst on Wright's brain stem had burst a day earlier.A weeklong stay in the intensive care unit nursed him back to health. But he shudders to think what would have happened in absence of the air ambulance service run by MedStar, which is part of nonprofit Inland Northwest Health Services and has a base in Richland.
