SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn With a seal of approval from the Shelby County Commission, the enhanced ambulance contract through service provider Rural/Metro awaits the go-ahead from the county's participating municipalities.Millington officials said they plan to participate in the more expensive county-wide $2.88 million contract but have not yet confirmed their source of funding.

PITTSBURGH, Penn Continuing education usually conjures images of stuffy classrooms, flickering fluorescent lights and naps snuck on propped elbows.The Pittsburgh Mercy Health System is trying to avoid those frights this weekend by holding continuing education classes for regional emergency medical services at Cooper's Lake Campground in Slippery Rock. It's the first time they've done it, and "I hope it won't be the last," said Jeff Wess, manager of prehospital services at The Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh.

The Beulah Ambulance District has been an all-volunteer operation for 30 years, but as the community grows, some in the area now hope to establish a taxing district in order to hire an administrator and ensure 24-hour service.Pueblo County commissioners conducted a public hearing on the district's service plan this week, but didn't make a decision pending a similar hearing before the county's planning commission Tuesday.

KENNEWICK, Wash. Roger Wright credits Northwest MedStar for saving his life. About two years ago, a MedStar aircraft flew him to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center after doctors at Richland's Kadlec Medical Center referred him there. A cyst on Wright's brain stem had burst a day earlier.A weeklong stay in the intensive care unit nursed him back to health. But he shudders to think what would have happened in absence of the air ambulance service run by MedStar, which is part of nonprofit Inland Northwest Health Services and has a base in Richland.

Six Flags has shut down four thrill rides at parks around the country after a gruesome accident at an amusement park in Louisville.A 13-year-old girl's feet were severed just above the ankles Thursday as she rode the Superman Tower of Power ride, park officials said. The ride lifts passengers 177 feet straight up, then drops 154 feet, reaching a speed of 54 mph, according to the park's Web site.

PORTLAND, Ore. Unionized workers for the Portland area's largest ambulance service rejected a contract offer and authorized a strike, union leaders said Wednesday.But the union set no strike date, and the workers employer agreed to extend their contract 15 days to provide more time to bargain. With the contract extension, the earliest a strike could occur is July 16. "We're hopeful that the sides will continue to negotiate and come to an agreement," said Dr. Gary Oxman, Multnomah County health officer.
