Paramedic Fred Wurster had a great time at the EMS Today Conference & Exposition. He always has a good time at the conference, but this year was full of suprises for Wurster.Someone signed him up to compete in the„EMS game show during the EMS Today opening ceremony. In fact, he didn't even know he had been signed up until he got a phone call telling him when to show up. A surprise in itself, when he then figured out it was during the opening ceremony, his first reaction was, "Hold on, I'm not interested."

This has been a concern of a number of EMS leaders and researchers over many years, with serious ambulance crashes and„EMS roadside tragedies occurring every day.National resources exist to investigate these tragic events and to assist„EMS in improving safety. The primary organization that can bring this expertise to„EMS is the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

As you read this I hope you're making plans to attend EMS Today in Baltimore. I'll be participating in several trauma-related presentations at the conference this year. On March 26 I, along with Dr. Peter Pons, Dr. Jeffrey Guy and Greg Chapman, will be presenting an eight-hour continuing education (CE) offering "Trauma from A to Z." It's intended to cover the National Registry of EMT trauma CE requirements. Following that I'll be on a panel and wind up with an assessment lecture at 7 p.m.

On Friday, Feb. 1, Maryland„ Gov. Martin O'Malley announced a multi-year effort to improve public safety and emergency response in„Maryland. O'Malley, joined by Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith, Maryland State Police (MSP) Col. Terence B. Sheridan, Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems Executive Director Bob Bass and Maryland Fire and„EMS leaders announced the allocation of $33.6 million to buy three new state police helicopters to improve the response capabilities of the MSP airborne system.
