GLEN CARBON, Ill. After years of planning, the growing village of Glen Carbon finally has its own ambulance service to handle emergencies.This month, the Glen Carbon Fire Protection District, which consists primarily of the village with small chunks of surrounding municipalities, launched an ambulance service with 13 employees and two new vehicles. "I think it's a long overdue event," said Glen Carbon Police Chief David Bradford. "It's a giant step and is going to improve service delivery in the village."
PORTLAND, Maine The cities of Portland and South Portland have reached a preliminary agreement on combining their emergency 911 call centers.Under the proposal, which recently received tentative approval from both city councils, the two centers in South Portland and Portland will merge into one larger center in Portland by October 2008.
LIVERMORE, Maine For two years, NorthStar EMS paramedic Samantha Massey has worked 40 hours per week rescuing the injured and helping the sick in the Livermore area.After putting in her hours at that full-time job with the Franklin Memorial Hospital ambulance service, Massey does the same thing for 24 to 36 hours on a per-day basis at Winthrop Ambulance.

A former Smithsburg Ambulance chief was dropped from a lawsuit recently filed by the mother and fianc of a woman who died from pregnancy complications while the chief was taped making jokes and saying, "...they get what they deserve." Washington County Circuit Judge John H. McDowell signed an order Monday dismissing the complaint against Jason Tracey.

Menlo Park Fire District leaders have long clamored for ways to improve ambulance service within their boundaries.They've reached a point where they're entertaining the idea of opting out of San Mateo County's ambulance system and creating their own program."We are not particularly happy with the service," district board President Ollie Brown said. AURORA, Colo. An Aurora emergency operator erroneously transferred a frantic call to the Denver 911 system to report the drownings of two siblings before realizing the address of the tragedy was in her city. The call-taker caught her mistake within a minute and summoned Aurora firefighters to the apartment building where the sister and brother were found in the pool, Michael Bedwell, the city's manager of public safety communications, said Thursday.

A voice from the police scanner airwaves echoed through Fire Station No. 1 Friday morning, welcoming Sierra Madre as the last city in Los Angeles County to have its own paramedic programs. The announcement from a dispatcher in the Verdugo Fire Communications Center in Glendale, which serves 11 San Gabriel Valley cities, was greeted with applause by the roughly 75 people gathered at the Sierra Madre fire station for inauguration of the city's new paramedic program.
