The Boyertown Community Ambulance Service celebrated 80 years of service Saturday with renewal of commitment to the community.
Members of BCAS renewed their pledge “to provide comfort and care, when our community calls” during a family-friendly celebration that included a pig roast, music, awards ceremony and unveiling of a new sign outside BCAS headquarters on South Chestnut Street in the borough.
The ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Dr. Robert D. Machamer Jr., pastor of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Boyertown.
Founded in 1941, the BCAS provides advanced life support services to Boyertown, Colebrookdale Township and parts of Douglass and Earl townships. The service also provides assistance to crews in neighboring communities, including Bally, Bechtelsville and surrounding townships.
“The long history of our ambulance service is not only a reflection of the care we provide to the community but also the support the community provides to us,” Amy Muzopappa, president of BCAS, said in a news release. “As a private, nonprofit organization, we rely on donations to survive.”
Changes since the service’s founding, such as advancements in equipment and training protocols, have led to better patient care, Muzopappa said.
“But one thing remains the same,” she said, “the selfless dedication of our people.”
The celebration Saturday came at the end of National Emergency Medical Services Week. The weeklong observance was first recognized by President Gerald Ford in 1974 and has become an annual tradition. This year’s theme was EMS: Caring for Our Communities.
“The EMS professionals that staff our EMS service 24/7/365 are top notch,” Jeff Knopf, executive director of BCAS emergency medical services. “Over the past year, our EMS professionals have been on the frontline in the war against COVID-19. We have risen to the challenge, time and time again.”
