Chief Rob Brown serves as Fire Chief in the City of Fresno, California – – California’s 5th largest city. Brown leads a staff of over 350 career personnel in an all-hazards response agency operating from 23 stations that also serves the North Central and Fig Garden Fire Districts and the Fresno Yosemite International Airport. The Department responds to over 40,000 emergency incidents and operates on a budget of $58 million.
As Fresno Fire Chief, Brown oversees a traditional Fire Department that also provides Technical Rescue Operations, Dive-Rescue, Swift-Water Rescue, Wildland Firefighting and Airport Crash Fire Rescue and incorporates the Office of Emergency Management and the Office of the Fire Marshal.
Brown has been in the fire and EMS service for 31 years, beginning his career as a firefighter/paramedic in 1981 with the Boone County (MO) Fire District. Brown has served as fire chief for the South Metro Fire District (Kansas City, MO), Anderson Township, Ohio (Cincinnati), Castel Rock, Colorado (Denver) and as Stafford County’s fire County Fire Chief (Metro Washington, DC) over the past 20 years prior to his appointment in Fresno.
Brown currently serves on the Executive Board of the International Association of Fire Chief’s EMS Section and has since 2006. In 2008, Brown was appointed as the Chair of the IAFC’s Economic Crisis Task Force. Additionally, Brown serves on Editorial Board of the Journal of Emergency Medical Services (JEMS). Brown is considered an authority on the impact of the recent economic crisis on local government and has been a frequent lecturer on topics related to the state of the economy and what economic recovery means to the fire service.
Brown holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Missouri and is a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer program at the National Fire Academy and is a Chief Fire Officer Designate by the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Chief Brown is the past President of the Missouri Valley Division of the IAFC and the Colorado State Fire Chiefs Association and Chair of the Northern Virginia (DC Metro) Regional Council Fire Chief’s Committee.
