EMS Education, the Disconnect from The Classroom to the Streets. What Are We Missing?
EMS Survey Says: EMS providers feel their education doesn't prepare them for the streets. This presentation provides evidence of a disconnect from what we teach in the classroom versus the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to deal with patients in the streets.
In this session, the speakers will present the results from a national survey that explored whether training adequately prepares EMS clinicians in emerging, non-technical competencies, and how we may need to reevaluate our teaching accordingly.
Learning Objectives
- To identify the emerging competencies needed by the modern-day EMS clinician
- To define emerging competencies, such as cultural competency, medication reconciliation, social determinants of health, and implicit bias, as they relate to EMS
- Review recent research findings that highlight the gaps between EMS training and practice.
- To provide recommendations for EMT & paramedic program curriculum improvements to address these areas of the human condition.
