This morning at the Fire-Rescue Med Conference, sponsored by International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) EMS Section Conference in Las Vegas, two new services that will aid emergency services were announced.

In July 2011, Best Buy stores will begin selling conversion kits that will fit all model cars, not just General Motors models, and include a rear-view mirror replacement equipped with OnStar Bluetooth and satellite features. It will feature voice access for directions and emergency notification and requests, immediate crash alert and geo-location notification, and open, two-way contact and consultation with OnStar communicators.
Purchasers will get a replacement mirror that will wirelessly connect them to OnStar. The mirror will have internal Bluetooth capability, so it can connect to your smart phone to access OnStar.
The system will also offer OnStar’s turn-by-turn navigation and, if a calling package is purchased, built-in phone capabilities.
Because the mirror contains a global positioning sensor, the command center will also be able to track a vehicle in case of theft.
OnStar currently fields more than three million calls a month from six million subscribers. But until now, that famous “blue button” has only been able to be pressed by those who own General Motors cars.
Now this capability will be available to just about any driver. OnStar reports that 99 percent of cars will be able to be supported by the new OnStar mirror, to be offer at a retail cost of $299 (plus installation).
OnStar’s original system included 38 components throughout the vehicle. The new OnStar system is incredibly because of advances in technology and miniaturization, which can now all be packed within the mirror’s body.
Users will have to subscribe to OnStar and pay a monthly service fee that currently costs $18.95 a month, or $199 annually.
The availability and addition of this new innovation will allow for a significant increase in the number of early alerts and notification of EMS, police and fire services of the time, location and severity of accidents occurring on our nation’s highways.
OnStar has trained and certified its entire staff of 200-plus communicators and emergency medical dispatchers (EMDs) and is now offering medical self help and assessment services to callers in need of emergency medical care and reporting emergency incidents.
This new capability is significant because it now means that a industry-recognized, high-quality level of caller query, medical assessment and priority determinant service will be available to drivers all across America in rural, suburban and urban environments.
