Lead-foot drivers in Newark, Delaware may soon be paying a $10 ambulance fee as part of their traffic tickets.

The city estimates the fee would raise $40,000 per year for the Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company, the Newark Post reports.

The state has had a $10 ambulance fee since 2014 in Justice of the Peace courts. Newark’s traffic cases are handled in Alderman’s Court, so the fee must be authorized separately.

The volunteer Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company has an annual budget of $4.5 million, with only 30 percent coming from government sources. The remaining comes from insurance, donations and fundraisers.
