A Texas man got to thank the Cypress Creek EMS crew who saved his life recently with a whole blood transfusion.

Verne Smith was shot in February while driving his car, the agency said. The shotgun pellets lodged in liver and was causing Smith to bleed out.

Fortunately for Smith, Cypress Creek EMS is one of the few EMS systems in the country that carries whole blood.

Assistant Medical Director and Army EMS Fellow Dr. Nick Studer opted for a rare procedure establishing a central line into the subclavian vein which feeds directly to the heart and offers a larger flow rate than a traditional transfusion in the arm.
