Fifty members of the New Orleans (LA) Fire Department (LAFD) have tested positive for COVID-19. However, 42 members have now returned to work, according to a report from CBS affiliate 4WWL.
Among those is LAFD Captain Roy Simmons, a 27-year veteran of the department, who recently fought and beat suspected COVID-19. Simmons learned he contacted a positive patient in a phone call he received from the LAFD’s medical coordinator. Two days later, the coronavirus symptoms set in.
Despite being turned down for testing at a drive-through test site, Simmons was able to beat the illness at home and had no major complications. However, he knows not everyone has been as fortunate.
The disease has claimed multiple New Orleans first responders, including veteran New Orleans Police Department Officer Mark Hall Sr., who passed away from the illness on April 30th.
