Fifty years ago, Michael and Angie Moss, a pair of Southern Baptists, founded Sweet Shop USA in Fort Worth, which has become the largest handmade chocolate manufacturer in the country. Now located in Mount Pleasant, the company supplies chocolate to thousands of retailers nationwide, including Nordstrom, as reported by Longview News-Journal.
Sweet Shop USA has now become one of the factories converted to supply hospitals with medical face shields they need during the current coronavirus pandemic. With the pandemic slowing down sales across retail, Sweet Shop USA was forced to lay off about 10 of its 80 employees. The Mosses, who are members of New Beginnings Baptist Church in Longview, began thinking about what to do.
On March 20, Michael Moss woke up with an idea to make medical face shields. He asked their vendor in New York, who usually supplies packaging to Sweet Shop USA, and inquired if it could cut plastic shields with a die cut machine.
According to Angie Moss, the vendor was planning to shutter his business on the following Monday because of a lack of orders, and he was happy to now have something to make, Angie Moss said.
