Meet Philadelphia’s Assistant Deputy Commissioner for EMS

The Philadelphia Inquirer sat down for an in-depth feature article with Crystal Yates, the Philadelphia Fire Department’s assistant deputy commissioner for EMS.

The daughter of a Philadelphia firefighter, Yates is now one of the highest-ranking women in the department and the first woman to lead the city’s paramedics at the executive level.

In her role, the newspaper reports, Yates helped create a response unit that pairs paramedics and case managers to respond to opioid overdose calls.

Additionally, Yates says, the most pressing health crisis in the city is poverty: “We know the social determinants of health, so everything all boils down to poverty,” she told the newspaper.
