NAEMSP Statement on the Las Vegas Mass Shooting and Firearms

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) issues the following statement in response to the recent mass shooting.

We join the nation and the world in grieving for the victims of this tragic shooting and in profound gratitude for our first responders, who time and time again rise to the occasion and save lives in the most dangerous and horrific situations.

The security of the American public and the first responders is increasingly threatened by deadly attacks of all kinds. Despite two decades of declining firearm-related deaths, our country has been stunned by a recent escalation of gun violence, punctuated by two of the most lethal civilian mass shooting attacks in U.S. history within just the last year and a half.

Emergency responders across the nation unflinchingly put their lives on the line every day to protect and rescue Americans in their most vulnerable moments, but it’s critical to acknowledge the equally serious danger of emergency responder suicide rates and the role that firearms play in these tragic fatalities.

As with all public health crises, federal and state governments must thoughtfully deliberate and boldly act on the best ways to address and deter the increasingly deadly problem of gun violence in America. NAEMSP urges Congress to advance bipartisan solutions and consider reasoned input from private industry and diverse stakeholders.

NAEMSP is a patient-centered group composed of nearly 2,000 highly-trained emergency medical care providers, partnering to provide leadership and foster excellence in the subspecialty of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) medicine.
