Webcast: How EMS Can Reduce Opioid Overdoses

The NTHSA Office of EMS is hosting a webcast on Thursday, August 25th titled “How EMS Can Reduce Opioid Overdoses.” The United States is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic, affecting communities across the nation every day. EMS is often the first to arrive on the scene of an overdose, which gives providers an important responsibility in providing timely, appropriate care – but also presents EMS with opportunities to provide valuable information to public health and other partners to play a role in preventing overdoses before they occur. The panelists will discuss:
  • Why New Orleans EMS partnered with public health agencies to monitor opioid overdoses and educate the public on naloxone
  • How the New Orleans Health Department brought together EMS, public health providers and hospitals to collaborate on efforts to prevent overdoses
  • How New Hampshire is piloting a mobile integrated healthcare approach for substance abuse referrals and using EMS data to track opioid overdoses
  • The nationwide opioid overdose epidemic and collaborative efforts taking place at the federal level to combat this public health emergency
