Paul E. Pepe, MD, MPH, was asked to describe how he stumbled upon innovative concepts such as Auto-PEEP, permissive hypotension in trauma and a myriad of other observations that eventually changed worldwide medical practice, in addition to describing the observations and index cases that led him to these “game-changing” concepts.
Some key points that Pepe emphasized were:
- It wasn’t rocket science, but simply open-mindedness and asking “why?”
- It was also conscientious “caring” for the patient followed-up with basic methodical research and analysis.
- And a little dumb luck that led to these “dumb-founded discoveries”.
