Smartphone App Helps Swiss EMS Rescue Mountain Guide

Issue 1 and Volume 40.

A Swiss Air-Rescue Rega helicopter crew rescues a mountain guide who dislocated his left shoulder during a high-altitude climb. The guide was able to activate the EMS system’s new smartphone app that transmits the latitude/longitude coordinates of callers to the helicopter dispatch center, as well as directly to the cockpit of the Rega rescue helicopter, to ensure rapid dispatch, no misunderstandings in the alarm chain, and more efficient dispatch and response. The crew evacuated the 51-year-old with a rescue hoist and flew him to a hospital facility in a metropolitan area. This was the 1,000th rescue operation since the introduction of the Rega emergency app, which has been invaluable in rapidly locating patients in alpine landscapes and forest regions.
