First Med EMS abruptly ended operations on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, leaving hundreds of employees jobless and more than a half-million patients scrambling to find alternative medical transportation.
The private EMS company, based in Wilmington, N.C., provided medical services in more than 70 municipalities in six states. Former employees have told news outlets that the company shut down without notice, only finding out they had lost their jobs when they arrived at work to find the doors locked.
Much of First Med’s business was non-emergent, and dispatch services in several cities reported that First Med called them on Friday night to stop all requests for emergency runs. Medical facilities also reported that the closure took them by surprise.
