Audit Finds Safety Shortcomings at Austin EMS Agency

AUSTIN, Texas — City auditors detailed several weaknesses Wednesday they said they identified during an audit to assess worker safety at Austin-Travis County EMS, including that the agency failed to fully implement recommendations from 2001 aimed at reducing recurring on-the-job injuries.

The agency has started several safety-related initiatives, according to the audit, which covered the department’s worker safety operations and injury data from October 2009 through September. But safety program goals aren’t clearly communicated and safety-related responsibilities are scattered throughout the department, the audit says.
