Pump it Up
IV pumps in EMS were once the exclusive domain of critical care transport and flight services. Recent advancements in pharmacology have made a number of drugs safe and effective for EMS use. These drugs are best given under the control of a pump. Bodyguard 121 Twins IV Pump from bBraun gives you the flexibility to deliver antibiotic, chemotherapy, total parenteral nutrition or patient-controlled analgesic infusions in a compact device, which will be at home in an ambulance. The ability to program your department’s drug formulary adds an extra element of safety by limiting drug-dose errors.

Vacuum splints are effective at fracture stabilization, and they’re comfortable for the patient. Full-body vacuum splints do a fantastic job of spinal immobilization but may be a little cumbersome in certain situations. The Fasplint Half-Back from Hartwell Medical provides another option for immobilization and patient comfort. Simply position the Fasplint Half-Back from the patient’s shoulders to hips, and you’ll provide a more comfortable spinal immobilization. The Fasplint Half-Back can also support a geriatric patient with significant kyphosis who can’t be placed supine on any surface.

Rapid assessment mode is engaged, and you’re on your game. Blood pressure, lung sounds and pupils are all checked, and the size of the wound is measured—all without using any tools besides the stethoscope around your neck. Your stethoscope is one tool that is always with you, so why not have it perform several functions? The new LOLA Advanced Assessment Stethoscope incorporates an LED penlight as part of the stainless steel chest piece and a pupil gauge and 40 cm ruler as part of the tubing.

Field to Cloud to Hospital
Has computer-based documentation really changed how you operate on a scene, or do you still scribble notes on paper then type the data into a chart at the receiving facility or base? How cool would it be if you could use an intuitive, touch-screen tablet to capture the data and have it securely transmitted to the receiving hospital in real time? The new Mediview Mobile Software from Beyond Lucid Technologies does that and many other tasks. Designed to bridge the gaps between the many systems used in EMS, Mediview can interface with your call intake center to provide dispatch data to the crew. This data is then used by the global positioning system portion of the program to get you to the patient as quickly as possible. Once you’re on scene, you can enter data quickly onto a tablet device that’s securely stored in a cloud-based hub and can be accessed by area hospitals, which are aware of an EMS crew on scene in their catchment area.

Next Level PPE
There are times when our duty uniform isn’t sufficient personal protective equipment. If you’ve ever treated someone from a house that could have been featured in the TV show “Hoarders,” you know how your skin crawls for the rest of the shift. The new Kleenguard line of coveralls from Kimberly Clark is made from a three-layer fabric that provides protection from body fluids and other bugs. The outer fabric layers are tear- and abrasion-resistant, spunbonded polypropylene, and the inner layers are constructed of a breathable microporous film that provides resistance to many liquids and dry particulates, allowing heat and sweat vapor to escape. Passes ASTM F1670/F1671 testing for penetration of blood, bodily fluids and bloodborne pathogens.

Electric Off-Road Transport
Providing EMS in off-road settings is a huge challenge. Finding a vehicle that can carry the gear and people needed to respond involves choices on vehicle type, size, power, weight and payload. The Pro UTV EMS from Xtreme Green offers a “green,” 100% electric option to address this need. With a top speed of 25 mph and a range of 75 miles, you should be able to respond to all but the most remote location. The standard four-wheel drive can be switched easily to two-wheel drive for on-road use. The front and rear all-wheel wishbone independent suspension, heavy-duty shock absorbers and four-wheel disc brakes provide a safe and stable ride. Emergency signaling systems include a lightbar, hazard lights, headlights, public address system and siren.
