Issue 4 and Volume 37.

Active Assessment
Brian Pearce (at left), a paramedic from Cumberland County (N.C.) EMS, assesses a patient during the final scenario of the 2012 JEMS Games Clinical Skills Competition, held at the EMS Today Conference & Exposition in Baltimore. The final scenario involved an American Red Cross disaster assistance shelter in operation shortly after a tornado impacted an area. Teams were tasked with treating seven patients in just 20 minutes. In addition to asthma and the significant penetrating trauma patient shown here, other patients presented with such conditions as fractures, acute anxiety, and an electrocution that progressed into cardiac arrest. The Cumberland County EMS team came in first in the competition because of the team’s ability to manage this chaotic scene and the host of patients treated in an exceptionally quick and effective manner./Photo Glen Ellman
